Paying to increase site traffic

Buying popularity. It sounds so tawdry. But sometimes it just isn't enough to rely on the search engine listings, word of mouth, and the other forms of "free" advertising. Getting your site to the top of search engine rankings certainly isn't very quick, or easy. So are there other ways to get eyeballs looking at your site?

Search terms

To start with, you could sponsor ad links for well-selected key words and phrases in the search engines to give your site an initial boost. Because you only pay when people actually use them, sponsored links can be a cost-effective way of getting people to visit your site, especially if your site does its job of getting them to buy once they get there.

Banners, buttons and leaders

Search engines aren't the only place to advertise. If you sell products, comparison shopping engines and product directories could be effective. In general, any site that attracts people who might like to visit your site is potentially a good place to be seen, as long as it isn't the site of one of your competitors.
